What is the skateboard chassis?
The reason why the skateboard chassis is called “skateboard” is simply because of its resemblance, which has no deeper meaning. Like BYD’s “blade battery”, we first jump out of the more concrete term “skateboard” and regard it as a kind of chassis.
The characteristics of the sliding plate chassis are that the power, braking, steering, and three electric modules of the whole vehicle are integrated on the chassis to form an independent functional area. Unlike other chassis, the sliding plate chassis realizes the separation of the upper and lower car bodies through the reserved electrical and car body interfaces, so that the car body and the cabin can be replaced as required.
To put it bluntly, most boys had contact with the skateboard chassis when they were young, just on the 4WD.
As we all know, the core module of the four-wheel drive car is integrated in the chassis. What the toy company needs to do is to create the “Ares Rush” or “Ares Sonic” on the basis of the same chassis. The skateboard chassis is an advanced four-wheel racing chassis, which can also be defined as a “shared” chassis.
From the 4WD racing car, we can learn three key points of the skateboard chassis:
1) The core control modules related to the whole vehicle are integrated on the chassis;
2) The sliding plate chassis can realize the separation of upper and lower car bodies;
3) Different car bodies can be switched at will.
If you are interested in the automotive industry all the year round, you should be able to understand how subversive these three priorities are. After understanding the concept of skateboard chassis, we will popularize some relatively hard core things.
First of all, in order to realize the upper and lower split car building, the sliding plate chassis must adopt the scheme of full integration+full line control. The sliding plate chassis integrates power, braking, steering, thermal management, three electricity, etc. into the chassis, and needs to achieve full line control, so as to facilitate the decoupling and separation of upper and lower car bodies. This is also the biggest difference between the skateboard chassis and the pure electric platform. Take the pure electric platform of Tesla and Volkswagen MEB as an example. Their production and design are all centered on the body, and they can’t really separate the body from the chassis.
Secondly, after realizing the upper and lower split car building, the sliding plate chassis also needs to have the capacity of “upper and lower integrated bearing”. When developing the chassis, you only need to define the interface. As for the design of the body, you should give it to the car company. That is, you can achieve independent development and iteration of the body and chassis, and achieve “one chassis for multiple purposes”. This will not only accelerate the development cycle and efficiency, but also greatly reduce the research and development cost. When the chassis and the upper assembly are assembled together, the whole car is integrated with load bearing and movement, so as to achieve optimal handling, safety and comfort.
